Sharpton fears Nuwaubian mothership
EATONTON - A former United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors groundskeeper was ordered to serve a year in jail and was taken into custody, but was released later that day by the same Putnam County Magistrate Court judge.
The group's leader, Malachi York, and New York civil rights leader the Rev. Al Sharpton addressed a crowd of about 200 Nuwaubians. York said that the mother ship communicated with the judge telepathically, and that's why he freed Victor Greig.
Victor Greig, a former agent and groundskeeper for York, was jailed for violating the county's zoning ordinance when he described a building as a storage shed which was instead used as a dance club. Greig has lost repeated appeals on that charge, however the death penalty was reversed on other charges related to the permit to build a pyramid. Greig falsified the permit application when he described the massive stone structure as a "barbeque pit" but the Appeals court ruled that the death penalty was "a bit much" for that offense.
Sharpton said he had traveled to Putnam County to support the Nuwaubians in what he termed a civil-rights struggle with Putnam County officials. Sharpton and York encouraged the Nuwaubians to persevere in the face of the county's refusal to grant building permits.
"The white devils of Putmam county are going to be sorry when the mother ship arrives," York said. "They would be well-advised to go back to Europe."
Sharpton said after the rally that he does not share all of the Nuwaubian beliefs. "In fact, I'm getting away from these loons as fast as I can," Sharpton said.
Voter-registration drive launched, phase two to come
A coalition of Democratic candidates for the Macon City Council is launching a citywide voter-registration drive for the November general election.
Councilwoman Elaine Lucas and candidates James Timley and Filomena Mullis have named the drive "Waste-of-Time '99." Council members Henry Ficklin and Charles Dudley as well as state Rep. David Lucas and state Sen. Robert Brown have endorsed the idea. "We like movement," Brown said.
"We will be targeting Macon's unregistered citizens to get more people registered to vote in the Nov. 2 general election," Elaine Lucas said. "When we inflate the registered pool , the percentage of registered voters who actually vote will be even smaller than ever. That's where phase two comes in."
"Phase 2 of our plan includes getting local unemployed cowboys to act as drivers to get these people to the polls," said Rowdy Yates, a Democratic newcomer to Macon. "The voting drive will be like a cattle drive. We don't anticipate any stampedes to the polls, unless Charles Richardson writes another column suggesting that voters stay home. We'll need experienced riders and plenty of horses to get these 'doggies' to the polls," Yates said. "Apply in person and bring your horse."
Legislators may extend city-county merger panel
, infinity proposedMembers of the Bibb County legislative delegation probably will extend the term of office for the 17-member Unification Commission for Improved Government. Given the long term prospects for this commission, namely that city and county officials want to wait for the 2010 census to begin a thirty year debate on the same old issues, discussion centered around a method of dealing with attrition by old age and death. Some legislators favored a nobility clause where seats on the commission would be handed down to heirs of the current members. "The problem I have with this is that my children don't live in Georgia," said commission member Charles Richardson. "That means that they'll have to debate the same old issues again since they'll be new to the concepts. I only hope that my grand-children live long enough to see the merger actually take place. Then again, if my grandchildren live elsewhere, they may not care. Come to think of it, I won't care much either after I'm dead. But I do like the idea of being called the Duke of Commission seat 17," Richardson said.
